Spanish Rice Master Mix

I make up my own bags of Spanish Rice Mix for the pantry. It saves money from those expensive store bought packets, and tastes great too!

You can create your own convenience packets. Let me share with you how I make mine.

Spanish Rice Mix:
(makes 1 packet)

1 Tablespoon minced dried onions
2 Tablespoons dried green pepper flakes
1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules (or 1 cube crumbled)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (more if you like it spicier)
1 cup long grain  white rice uncooked

Mix all ingredients together and store in ziplock bags or airtight containers. Label and use within 6-8 months.

To make Spanish Rice:
(Makes about 4 servings)

1 spanish rice mix packet
1 (16 oz) can diced tomatoes (do not drain)
1 cup water

In large skillet over medium heat mix all ingredients together.
Bring to a boil.
Cover and reduce heat to simmer.
Simmer 20 minutes.

  1. Oh, Yes. This looks and sounds wonderful. Homemade is always much better than that store bought stuff.
I haven't seen the dried green pepper flakes at Wal-Mart but then again I must admit that I haven't really been looking for them but will be keeping an eye out for em that's for sure.

Such a great recipe. Thank you
A person could mix up a large batch and store single servings in 1/2 pint canning jars or other small containers.

    1. The first time I went looking for green pepper flakes I was doubtful, as I had never seen it either, but there it was right at my local grocery store, but I haven't purchaed any in a while, as I had my original container left, so now that stores are carrying fewer and fewer items it may be harder to find than it once was. I think those 1/2 pint canning jars would be just right too! Great idea!

  2. Is the white rice quick cooking or long ?

    1. Julie, thanks for asking! I hadn't noticed that I didn't clarify that, so I just went back and fixed it. It is long grain rice. (although I am sure there is a way to adjust things for quick cooking, I just haven't done it).
