Homemade "Boxed" Macaroni and Cheese

 This homemade stove top Mac-N-Cheese recipe is a delicious and creamy version, that is WAY better than the boxed kind, and just about as easy! I love the taste, but also that I know how to pronounce all the ingredients!

Don't buy boxed again!

Jan's Tip: If your local grocer has a bag of shredded cheese labeled as Mac-n-Cheese shreds, get it. It is a great mixture of Sharp Cheddar, American, and Swiss that will add a wonderful creaminess to the sauce without being "stringy".

Stovetop Macaroni and Cheese
  • 2 cups macaroni or shells pasta (uncooked)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 Tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • optional: 1/8 tsp. of dried powdered mustard
  1. In a medium saucepan, cook pasta according to package. Drain and set aside.
  2. Whisk together milk and flour in the pan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. (This will take about 2 minutes.)
  3. Add cheese, salt, pepper and mustard. Stir until smooth.
  4. Mix in cooked macaroni.
  5. Remove from heat and let stand about 5 minutes.
